Salaams not a bad first try, I'm still trying to get to grips with the basics of 3d Studio max to no avail. Do you like medieval fantasy or soemthing?
3D Studio Max has got a fantastic set of tutorials covering everything from modeling to textures. If you do not have it, you may want to have a look at btjunkie.org where it is available. I do like fantasy, but I thought I'd make a sword 'cuz it would be easy (doh!) - boy was I wrong.
